After watching Super Sunday as Manchester City gave United a footballing lesson, the main source of debate in the Football Transfer Tavern is surrounding events at Chelsea.
Although Blues supporters were pleased to see their side emerge with a 2-0 victory against Fulham yesterday there is still bemusement about Spanish star Juan Mata not even making the bench.
Jose Mourinho decided not to include the midfielder in his squad and he was left to watch the game from the stands. This has brought about speculation that he could soon depart Stamford Bridge and today’s Mirror Football suggests that Rafael Benitez could offer him an escape route at Napoli.
The manager who ended last season as interim manager is SW6 is now preparing to move for Mata in the January transfer window.
Mourinho has always stated that he regards Brazilian Oscar as his first choice number 10-type player and believes that Mata “has to fight and work for his opportunities”, after some displays which the former Madrid boss said were “not convincing”.
This has left Chelsea supporters in the tavern frustrated as they believe Mata, who won the Player of the Year last term and the season before, is one of their best players.
A source told Sunday Mirror Sport: “The players are as surprised as everyone over Mourinho’s treatment of Mata.
“Most of the players thought Mata was Chelsea’s best player last season and would never have imagined his place would be under threat.”
Mourinho maintains that Mata will not be sold but Benitez seems ready to test their resolve for the 25-year-old.
Should Chelsea sell Mata given Mourinho’s unwillingness to play him? Let us know your thoughts below.
