Leicester City fans are prepared for a scrap in the Tavern after former Liverpool defender and now Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher stated that he still cannot see Leicester winning the Premier League.
The comments came after Leicester beat reigning Champions Chelsea 2-1 to regain top spot of the Premier League table.
Yet, even with nearly half of the season played, Carragher still does not think that Ranieri’s side will remain as title contenders by May, despite the consistent form of star players like Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez.
“I still can’t see them winning the Premier League. It would have to be five or six games from the end of the season and they are still top of the league.”
Carragher also hinted that Leicester’s current form could potentially be a ‘purple patch’ and that they may be too reliant on certain players, though he was full of praise and admiration for such players.
“You still don’t expect as the months go on that they can keep this run going and that Mahrez, Vardy and Kante will stay fit. They are probably the three best players in the Premier League.
“The January window is a difficult one, do they think: “We have a right go at this to guarantee top four or even have a run at the title?” But could bringing in signings upset the apple cart? It seems such a settled team and they all know what they are doing, so it could be an awkward month for them.”
The 2-1 win over Chelsea on Monday night was perhaps unsurprising considering the Foxes’ extraordinary start to the season, having won 10 of their 16 league games and losing just once.
In Vardy, they have the division’s top scorer on 15 league goals, while Mahrez is the third top goalscorer in the league, netting 11 times, and has been one of the standout players of the season so far.
Joining Carragher on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football was three-time Premier League winner Frank Lampard, who also joined the ex-Liverpool man in stating that a top-four finish is more likely than a title win for Leicester.
“I can’t see them quite staying the distance but top four is definitely there for them now if they carry on playing the way they are,”
“It’s important that they keep their players in January. People might come in for Vardy and Mahrez, but if the players are smart they will stay where they are. They are playing great football, the club’s got momentum and if they get into the top four it would be an incredible story.
“We are all waiting for them to start losing games, it’s almost been too good to true. But they impressed me throughout the team and the story goes on. There is a togetherness and spirit about the club.”
