Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are intrigued to hear comments from a highly-rated manager, who’s caught the attention of the lads watching the FA Cup action in the bar.
The Sun states former Chile boss Jorge Sampaoli as claiming he was offered the vacant managerial position at Chelsea, until his lack of English proved detrimental to his claim for the position and the Blues appear to have gone with Antonio Conte instead.
Sampaoli, who led Chile to Copa America success last summer, has been out of a job since leaving his post with the South America nation and has been linked with a host of positions.
Chelsea were just one of the clubs linked with his signature and Sampaoli has revealed he held talks with the Premier League side.
“Now I can say that I was really, really close to becoming the new coach of Chelsea. I was about to be their new coach. I had this meeting with Chelsea’s owner and he told me that I was the first option at that moment.
“But then Conte appeared and it became a competition between us it was him or me. Unfortunately, Chelsea have chosen Conte over me. It’s a real shame for me, because I was so excited about coaching a Premier League club.”
Our landlord would have linked to see Sampaoli in the Premier League but he feels he’s a better fit for a lower side, rather than taking charge of a team like Chelsea.
Chelsea fans, did you owner make the right call here? Let us know in the comments below!
