Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are reacting to quotes made by a former manager of theirs, who has urged them to bring an academy graduate back to the club this summer.
During an interview with 888Sport, former first-team coach Rene Meulensteen as stating Manchester United should push to land Danny Drinkwater from Leicester City this summer, in a move that would bring the England international back to the club he left as a youngster.
26-year-old Drinkwater has excelled for shock Premier League winners Leicester City this season and his form has earned him a place in England’s provisional squad for the upcoming European Championships, which Roy Hodgson will axe three players from in the coming weeks.
Meulensteen believes Drinkwater’s United history makes him the perfect signing for the Red Devils this summer, stating he’s now an established star:
‘Drinkwater has a Manchester United history having come through the academy and look how he’s established himself in the Premier League,’
‘Sometimes you don’t have to look further because those players know what playing in the Premier League is all about. Players like Danny Drinkwater who is now in the England squad would fit in nice and easily.’
Our landlord agrees with the comments from Meulensteen and believes Drinkwater would be a solid replacement for outgoing veteran Michael Carrick.
