Former Newcastle defender rejects Tyneside return

santon.jpgOur resident Newcastle and Norwich fans who are enjoying deadline day with a pint or three have been drawn to reports that Davide Santon will only leave Inter Milan on a permanent basis.

The former Newcastle left-back has been linked with a switch to both the Magpies and the Canaries but Chronicle Live claim that he is not interested in a loan move.

Newcastle have been looking at signing a left-back during the final days of the window, but Santon does not see the benefit of any short-term move and would prefer to fight for his place in Italy, unless a permanent deal was offered.

The Italian even featured at right-back in the Milan derby last night, although his side lost 3-0.

Santon struggled for game time towards the end of his time on Tyneside, but he did not want to leave St. James’ Park last January and was keen to sign a contract extension at the club.

And he may well be a welcome addition to the club that he described as ‘great’ upon his departure. When he left last year, he said:

“It was with deep regret that when I spoke with John Carver and after five games on the bench in the Premier League without playing even a single minute, I realised that I was no longer in the first-team plans of the coach. It was then I was forced to think about my career and my future.”

“Following this, Inter Milan, the club where I was born and bred as a footballer, offered me an opportunity that I could not refuse.”

Newcastle fans, would you take Santon back to ease your defensive issues? Let us know in the comments below!
