The Newcastle United fans are gathered at the jukebox in The Transfer Tavern this evening and are discussing news that a former player is set to sue their club.
Metro is reporting that Jonas Gutierrez is suing the club for £2 million due to disability discrimination.
The Argentinian was diagnosed with testicular cancer in October 2013, but returned to play for the club before the end of that season, before further treatment in the summer of 2014.
Gutierrez claims that the reason he wasn’t picked is because the club didn’t want to trigger a contract extension which would have been offered has he played 80 games for the club.
He claims that then caretaker boss John Carver only started recalling him when it was clear that he was no longer able to make the amount of games required for a new deal.
Speaking about his situation, Gutierrez said ‘Due to their concerns about my cancer, I consider that the club then ensured that I would not be selected to start in a sufficient number of matches to trigger the option.
‘I think they feared that my illness would mean that I could no longer play at the highest level and they considered me to be a liability rather than an asset to the club.
‘During my chemotherapy treatment [in 2014], neither the manager, Alan Pardew, nor any club directors contacted me to see how I was feeling or to congratulate me on my recover.’
The Newcastle fans in The Tavern are not surprised Gutierrez has been forced to take action and admit they were disgusted with the way the club dealt with his illness!
A large amount of the United fans here in the Tavern admit they would love to see the midfielder back at St James Park!
