The Newcastle United fans who are gathered around the jukebox in The Transfer Tavern this evening are discussing comments made by a former top flight football about their club.
Writing in his article for The Chronicle, Don Hutchison has predicted carnage should the side be relegated to the Championship this week.
Newcastle’s survival hopes were dealt a major blow at the weekend following a win for Sunderland over Chelsea and a goalless draw between themselves meaning that the club could be relegated as early as tomorrow should Sunderland beat Everton in their game in hand.
Speaking about the club, Hutchison said:
“The big question is what happens next. If Benitez walks out, it’s carnage all over again. No manager, relegation and a big rebuilding job doesn’t sound like a happy summer on Tyneside.”
“Newcastle fans will be feeling devastated right now but if they managed to keep Rafa Benitez, that would probably soothe the pain a little bit.”
“I read on social media that a lot of Newcastle fans will be going to St James’ Park on the final day of the season and chanting Rafa’s name and basically appealing to him to try and commit to United beyond the final game of the season.”
“I can see why they would do that. United are such a big club and the potential is there to be a top-six club regularly if its run right. They’re a long way from that now and it will be a major rebuilding job. If Rafa took that on, I think he might achieve it within three or four years. But there’s so much to do that it’s going to be a big job persuading him to do it.”
The Newcastle fans in The Tavern are expecting Benitez to walk should they be relegated this week and lay a lot of the blame at the feet of Mike Ashley who they feel did not relieve Steve McClaren of his duties soon enough to give Benitez a real crack at leading the side to survival.
