It’s been a tough transfer window for Chelsea manager Antonio Conte who, despite adding to his team with the signing of Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid, has had to endure a real problem in the shape of Diego Costa.
The former fans favourite has been ousted to the sidelines by the Italian boss, who sees no place in his current side, despite the effect he’s had on the team over the past couple of years.
Costa has been at the heart of plenty of transfer talk over the summer transfer window and with no move away materialising just yet, could Chelsea be stuck with a player that evidently doesn’t want to be at the Bridge?
Quite possibly, yes and for former Liverpool star Graeme Souness, he believes having that negativity around the club when the season does get underway could cause Conte and the Blues all sorts of problems indeed.
Speaking to the Times in his column, Souness said: “Is this Chelsea squad weaker than the one of 12 months ago? Quite possibly. Are there more questions hanging over them than the squad for 2016-17? Definitely.
“If Costa hangs around then Conte could have a problem. Senior players must step up to the plate and ensure striker does not destroy team spirit,” he added.
It seems that Costa’s ill-feelings towards the club, despite his strong spell, are showing no signs of going away and for the Premier League champions, it’s of vital importance that this is resolved sooner rather than later.
Costa has been one of the best in the Premier League for sometime now. His power and goalscoring ability have never been in doubt but he’s always had an attitude, a swagger.
Now we’re seeing that more than ever and I agree with Souness, it could be devastating when the season does come around.
Chelsea need to get rid, or risk the morale of the whole squad being completely depleted before a ball is even kicked.
