The Man Utd fans in the Transfer Tavern were delighted when their side announced the arrival of Brazilian midfielder Fred earlier this week. It was a much-needed signing, and his arrival will likely go a long way to ensuring that their midfield is more dominant next season.
However, given how important Jose Mourinho’s midfield is, it would be wrong to say that there is no room for improvement. In particular, though Nemanja Matic had a great first season in Manchester, it’s evident that the Serbian isn’t perfect. His inconsistent form is a bit of a problem at points, and in particular, he often fades somewhat towards the end of the season. Furthermore, at 29-years-old, he’s also not the long-term solution that Man Utd need.
The Red Devils, then, should consider an audacious move for Tottenham man Victor Wanyama, who is rated at £27 million by Transfer Markt.
Wanyama has been one of the Premier League most consistent performers over the last few years, offering a brilliant level of stability in the middle of the pitch for Tottenham and formerly Southampton.
A fantastic tackler, he’s brilliant at breaking up player, whilst his boundless running and movement also both allow him to make an impact at both ends of the pitch. He’s been able to offer brilliant balance to the Spurs first team over the years, particularly alongside the more offensive Mousa Dembele, with the Kenyan often offering the main defensive quality alongside him.
In contrast to Matic, he’s able to keep the quality of his game at a high level all season long, and he deserves credit for that. Under Mourinho, you’d expect him to get even better, and at 26-years-old, he’s got a few years on Matic too.
Tottenham, of course, won’t want to sell Wanyama – but it’s certainly worth a try. Perhaps they could utilise the Lilywhites’ apparent interest, according to the Daily Mail, in Anthony Martial. Either way, a move for someone of Wanyama’s quality makes sense.
