Metro have Arsenal fans looking up with some serious interest here in the Football Transfer Tavern as they claim that one of the Gunners’ summer targets snubbed them for another club – the champions of Spain to be exact.
After being linked with a whole host of clubs including Arsenal, French international winger Antoine Griezmann finally decided on a move to Atletico Madrid and according to his comments, he has not looked back once.
As our punters note, this is another example of a player snubbing the chance to move to Arsenal and deciding that there are not only better clubs out there but also managers who they feel can help develop their career further.
Arsene Wenger does not seem to be making that list as frequently as he used to do!
Speaking to France Football about the move, he made it clear just why there was only one option for him.
Griezmann noted: “Why Spain and not elsewhere? This is my Championship, my home. I’m happy here and Atletico is a great club. The [champions] were willing to pay €30 million [£23.8m] for me.
“I had the boss [Simeone] on the phone. He motivated me and said the club really wanted me. I knew that I was coming here to learn.”
He also spoke about Diego Simeone – and noted that he made the difference in his final choice, adding: “Was it weird when PSG and Arsenal were also interested? [Atletico are] still the champions of Spain.
“I needed a club like that and a coach like Diego Simeone to progress. I always demand intensity in training. That’s my style and I like it.”
Arsenal fans. Is missing out on Griezmann that much of a loss considering you managed to snare Alexis Sanchez who can play in his role anyway? Let us know your thoughts below.
