The Football Transfer Tavern is packed when reports emerge that Liverpool and Tottenham face added competition for £6 million-rated Tiago Ilori from French big spenders Monaco, according to talkSPORT.
Sporting Lisbon have recently confirmed that they will sell the 20-year-old defender after failing to agree a new contract with the highly-rated Portuguese Under-20 international and that has brought about interest from across Europe including clubs in the Premier League.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is a keen admirer of the young defender and he reportedly saw a bid around £3 million knocked back earlier this summer but he hasn’t given up his pursuit of Ilori, who was born in London to an English father.
The Reds could be about to lose another centre back if Martin Skrtel can agree a move to Rafael Benitez’s Napoli side and Rodgers has outlined the youngster a suitable replacement for retiring centre half Jamie Carragher. Manchester City’s Kolo Toure has made the switch to Anfield but the Slovakian international’s expected departure leaves the Reds short at the back.
Ilori improved his reputation with some mature performances at the Under-20 World Cup in Turkey earlier this summer, and that alerted Andre Villas-Boas who is looking to add a new defender following the sale of Steven Caulker to Cardiff City.
However both Premier League sides will have fend over competition from Monaco who have set their sights on the Sporting Lisbon defender as they look to continue their summer spending spree following their promotion back to Ligue 1.
