It has certainly been a season of ups and mainly downs for Manchester United and here in the Football Transfer Tavern, the Daily Express has just added to that.
The publication has noted that Wayne Rooney is now fearful over his future role at the club given manager elect Louis van Gaal is a known fan of Robin van Persie – and fears he may well become second fiddle once again.
Under David Moyes, Rooney was a certainty for the United captaincy next term, not to mention being the main man up top, with Moyes’ relationship with van Persie being about as warm as the Antarctic!
Now however, England international Rooney feels all his hard work this term may be for nothing.
As one of our punters claims, under Sir Alex Ferguson, Rooney did not appreciate being second fiddle to RVP, who carried United to the title, but it is worth noting that no matter how good Rooney feels he is, he has only carried the United team to a Europa League spot at best this term.
If Rooney really wants to be considered in the bracket of a Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, it is worth asking how far they could have dragged the Red Devils this season.
Of course, all these leaks of worry and unhappiness could well be because Rooney feels he needs another pay rise – after all, that is how he ended up on £300,000 per week isn’t it?
Will Rooney still be considered the main man at Old Traford next season, even if van Gaal is in charge? Let us know your thoughts below.
