Aston Villa who have been linked with probably 50% of Europe’s top goalkeepers these last couple of weeks, have now set their sights on former Germany under-21 international Michael Rensing.
With Brad Friedel’s future at the club in major doubt, he is the latest player to be linked with the club as he is now a free agent.
Rensing began his career at Bayern Munich where he replaced the legendary Oliver Kahn who retired in 2007/08. A run of good form gained him recognition as one of Europe’s brightest prospects but ever since losing his place to Hans-Jorg Butt, his career has seemed to slowly fade away.
Michael Rensing is now 26 and he turned down a trial with Leicester City who were keen to take him on. He is looking to get back into first-team football and Gerard Houllier is set on revitalising the German’s career as Friedel’s successor.
I remember watching him in the champions league a few times as well as the Bundesliga and I believed he was going to become a leading goalkeeper in the game. Under the right guidance he could possibly have a big impact in the premier league or the Bundesliga, as rumours suggest FC Cologne are keeping tabs on him.
Is he good enough for the Premier League or should he have chosen Leicester? Can he go on to be a great replacement for Friedel and be as successful as he has been all these years? What we do know is his wage demands won’t be high and he must be worth a gamble surely!
