From Germany: Arsenal edge closer to long-term target after rejecting Serie A switch

The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that Unai Emery will replace Peter Cech this summer as part of a major squad upheaval, and recent reports from Germany have given them reason to believe a huge acquisition is on the horizon.

Peter Cech has been a loyal servant to the Premier League during his career with both Chelsea and Arsenal, but the Gunners faithful believe the time is right for him to move on.

Arsenal have been linked with plenty of goalkeepers in recent months, but one name which has consistently emerged is Bayer Leverkusen’s highly-regarded stopper Bernd Leno.

Despite being just 26-years-of-age, Leno has been Leverkusen’s number one for the best part of 7 years, and his international career has only been stifled by the excellence of Manuel Neuer.

Much to the delight of the resident Gunners faithful propping up our bar, reports from German media outlet Kicker suggest that Arsenal and Atletico Madrid are the favourites to secure Leno’s signature this summer now that the Germany international has turned down a move to Napoli.

Landlord’s verdict

Our landlord believes that Leno’s decision to turn down a move to Napoli bodes well for Arsenal’s chances of securing his signature, as it’s unlikely Atletico will need to sign a new goalkeeper this summer if they are able to retain the services of Jan Oblak.

After becoming increasingly dissatisfied with Cech’s performances in recent seasons, the Arsenal supporters are ready for the club to replace him with a top quality goalkeeper, and they believe Leno represents the perfect candidate to succeed him at the Emirates Stadium.
