From Italy: Southampton keen on physical forward to continue Hughes’ rebuild

Mark Hughes has been very active over the past couple of days when it comes to transfer dealings and the Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern will hope that is not it when it comes to making more deals.

The Saints have seen Stuart Armstrong arrive from Celtic and a fee agreed for Mohamed Elyounoussi of Basel, however, they have also watched Dusan Tadic make a switch to Ajax, which has disappointed a number of the residents.

Hughes is keen to make sure his side are not in the same position as last year, having just survived the drop by the skin of their teeth, and is desperate to bring some attacking threat to the club, as they struggled for goals throughout the season.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, the Saints are believed to be keen on Atalanta forward Andrea Petagna and could be able to bring him to the St. Mary’s Stadium for a fee in between the region of €10-12million.

The 22-year-old has been widely rated in Italy, having appeared at all levels of the national side, and proved he can find the back of the net in the Serie A, having scored six times and providing a further seven assists.

Landlord’s Verdict

The Saints in the Tavern would be pleased to see a player of his quality arrive at St Mary’s this summer and would hope he can have a similar impact for them. Petagna is a strong physical player that can hold the ball up well for his team-mates, which would make it seem he would be well-suited to the demands of Premier League football.
