Anyone watching the Manchester United vs. Valencia game last night must have at some point been struck by the same thought: when was the last time any English side, never mind United, fielded a team containing three Brazilians?
Well, that’s one for the statisticians, yet it seems Alex Ferguson is keen to add another Brazilian to his ranks, with reports circulating that the United manager is set to renew his long-standing interest in Douglas Costa – the “New Ronaldinho.”
Costa came through the ranks at Ronaldinho’s parent club, Gremio, and during the summer of 2009 United looked almost certain to sign the midfielder, after completing strenuous negotiations to bring Gremio’s asking price down from £21m to £8m plus add-ons.
However, despite interest from United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Barcelona, a big-money move never materialised for Costa, and the midfielder eventually signed for Ukrainian side, Shaktar Donetsk, for £4m in January 2010.
Yet the 20 year-old continues to impress at Shaktar, and having adapted to the European game so effectively in only a short time, Costa appears to be back on Fergie’s radar.
