Frustrating news for Everton in reported transfer pursuit

The Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern have spent the last few days patiently waiting for news of a potential signing…

The Toffees have spent freely this summer, encouraged by the big money sale of Romelu Lukaku, and they have built quite the squad as a result.

Comments from Ronald Koeman have hinted at another signing – Swansea midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson – and that news had left the fans in the Transfer Tavern feeling very excited indeed. The Icelandic midfielder has been fantastic in recent years, and our landlord has touted his arrival as the final piece in Koeman’s Everton puzzle.

However, a move for the 27-year-old isn’t as close as many in the pub would have you believe, with Sky Sports, in fact, reporting that Everton have hit a stalemate with Swansea as they look to tie up a deal, with no agreement reached yet. Significantly, a move is said to be far from dead, so it is still possible – but it is looking increasingly likely that the Icelandic midfielder will not be at Everton anytime soon.

This is a blow for Everton, especially with the season just around the corner. The fans in the Transfer Tavern had been hoping that he would be at the club in time for the opening day, but that doesn’t look likely to be the case.

Instead, it appears as though negotiations are ongoing, and whilst the clubs are still talking, a move appears to be far from done.

Landlord’s Verdict

Ronald Koeman has had a very progressive summer, but if his side fail to sign Sigurdsson it will be a real disappointment.

With Ross Barkley struggling, the Toffees lack a creative midfielder, and he would certainly fit the bill.

Any deal is likely to be expensive, but if the club want to challenge at the top, they can’t risk losing him over a few million pounds.
