Liverpool supporters have been somewhat downbeat in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team’s 18-match unbeaten run in all competitions come to an end at the hands of the Premier League’s bottom side Swansea City on Monday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the South Wales outfit having not tasted defeat since the rear end of October, and off the back of a wonderful victory over Premier League leaders Manchester City just a week previous. Yet the Merseyside giants produced a meek performance and were deservedly beaten at the Liberty Stadium, with Alfie Mawson’s effort just before half time enough to secure a 1-0 victory for Carlos Carvalhal’s side, in turn putting a dent in Liverpool’s top four ambitions.
Subsequently, there have been many frustrated Liverpudlians in the Tavern in the last few days, and their mood is unlikely to be improved by a recent report from Bild (via talkSPORT), which outlines a potentially huge blow in the Reds’ reported pursuit of winger Julian Brandt.
The 21-year-old currently plays his trade at Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen and has done so since January 2014, in which time he has earned 155 appearances for the club, netting 25 goals and laying on 33 assists in the process.
And with several caps at senior level for Germany, the wing wizard is clearly doing something right and as such set for a huge future in the game, which has reportedly had Liverpool interested in recent times as Klopp seeks to bolster his ranks ahead of a possible title push in years to come.
However, the Merseysiders look set to suffer a striking blow as reports suggest that Brandt will pen a new contract with the German club, all but ending speculation surrounding his future.
Landlord’s verdict: Julian Brandt has been mightily impressive for Bayer Leverkusen in the last few years, to the point that, at the age of 21, he already has 13 caps for Germany to his name.
And Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have reportedly been keeping tabs on the winger in recent times ahead of a possible move, yet they look set to be a dealt a striking blow as reports suggest that the youngster will pen a new deal with the Bundesliga outfit.
Doing so would remove the reported £11 million release clause in his contract, likely leaving Klopp’s side to turn their attentions to other targets.
