Tottenham fans have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in recent weeks, but the same can’t be said of our resident Liverpool supporters.
The Reds have won just one of their last six games in all competitions, a run which has seen them exit the Carabao Cup, fail to win either of their two Champions League clashes, and fall five points behind the Manchester clubs in the Premier League table.
And although Spurs are level on points with Jurgen Klopp’s side, the North London outfit have won both of their European encounters to sit level with Real Madrid at the top of Group H, leaving them in a great position to go one step further than last term and qualify for the knockout stages.
However, there may be some bad news around the corner for both Liverpool and Spurs fans if recent reports from Spain (via talkSPORT) are anything to go by, which outlines some information regarding midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, a reported target of the Premier League heavyweights.
The 24-year-old currently plays his trade at Serie A giants Inter Milan but has been shipped out on loan to Spanish club Valencia for the entirety of this current season, and he hit the ground running with a goal in their 2-2 draw with Real Madrid on the opening day last month.
Four further La Liga starts have followed for the France international, although he was sent off last time out against Real Sociedad, and he reportedly attracted the interest of Liverpool and Tottenham prior to moving to the Mestalla during the summer.
And recent comments from Valencia’s general director Mateo Alemany suggests that the Premier League duo will remain disappointed, saying: ‘We have a right to buy at the end of the season and already have an agreement with Kondogbia should we exercise the option.’
And this is likely to come as a huge blow to Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino, who look like having to turn their attentions to other midfield targets.
Landlord’s verdict: One of the criticisms labelled at Liverpool and Tottenham in recent times is their lack of strength in depth, with certain areas of both squads too light to deal with commitments on both a domestic and European front.
Thus, reports that both were keeping tabs on Inter Milan’s Geoffrey Kondogbia over the summer were hardly much of a surprise, with the 24-year-old proving to be quite the midfielder during his stint at the San Siro, even if he has been allowed out on loan to Valencia for the whole of this season.
And it is Valencia who hold all the cards in pursuit of a permanent deal for Kondogbia, according to their general director anyway, and that leaves both Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino likely needing to focus on other targets in the coming transfer windows.
