Arsenal and Liverpool supporters were in contrasting moods in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend, as the Gunners were comfortably beaten 3-1 by Manchester City on Sunday whereas the Reds recorded a third successive victory by dismantling West Ham 4-1 at the London Stadium.
Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal went into their clash with the Premier League leaders having won four of their preceding five league games, but they were no match for Pep Guardiola’s side as goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Aguero, and Gabriel Jesus sealed a 3-1 win for the hosts, with Alexandre Lacazette’s second half strike nothing more than a consolation for the Gunners. Yet Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool made it three wins in a week as a brace from Mohamed Salah as well as goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Joel Matip secured an easy 4-1 victory at West Ham, thus moving them above the Gunners in the Premier League table.
Thus, it has been our resident Reds supporters who have been making all the noise in the Tavern this week, but it may well be the mood of Arsenal fans which is about to improve if a recent report from Diario Gol (via The Daily Star) is anything to go by.
And that’s because they report that the North London giants are set to rival Klopp’s men in pursuit of Real Madrid shot-stopper Keylor Navas.
The 30-year-old made the move to the Bernabeu back in 2014 after impressing for Costa Rica at the World Cup in Brazil earlier that year, and he has since gone on to play 109 games for the European giants, in which time he has kept 38 clean sheets and helped them to win the La Liga title as well as two Champions League crowns.
However, reports suggest that the former Levante goalkeeper is unhappy at the club and could look to leave in the coming transfer windows, and Arsenal and Liverpool are seeking to exploit that by reportedly holding an interest in the 30-year-old.
But whether either are indeed able to get a deal done for the international shot-stopper remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Liverpool’s goalkeeper problems have been well-documented for a while now, with neither Simon Mignolet or Loris Karius seemingly doing enough to nail down the number one jersey at Anfield.
And there’s little doubt that between the two of them they have cost the Reds points in the last 12 months or so, so it’s not overly surprising to see the Merseysiders linked with a move for Real Madrid’s Keylor Navas.
But it’s not just Liverpool who are interested from the Premier League, as Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal are also thought to be in the running in their bid to provide adequate cover and indeed an alternative to Petr Cech.
Thus, with both seemingly vying for one Champions League place this season, whoever is in a better position come January could well hold all the aces in pursuit of the Costa Rica international.
