FSG left with no choice but to splash Liverpool’s cash on vital £40.5m-rated signing

Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are lost for words following their defeat in the Champions League final against Real Madrid – our punters are devastated that individual errors cost them the title.

The Reds started the game very well, but an injury to Mohamed Salah forced their player of the season to be substituted, changing the entire complexion of the match. With the scores level at half-time, there was all to play for until Loris Karius threw the ball at Karim Benzema. A wonder goal from Gareth Bale cancelled out Sadio Mane’s equaliser before Karius dropped an easy shot from a distance into his own net.

Their performances in Europe show the Reds are moving in the right direction, but they aren’t there just yet. With no game changers on the bench and no like-for-like replacements for Salah, they looked flat after the Egyptian departed. It’s hard to see a way back into the first team for Karius following one of the worst performances in cup final history.

First order of summer business must be to sign a long-term reliable number one. With Jan Oblak penning a new deal, their primary target must be Roma goalkeeper – Alisson Becker. Valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt, the Brazilian has earned plaudits for some exceptional performances in the Serie A. The stopper also made some great saves in the semi-finals against Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Still only 25, he wouldn’t be cheap, but Liverpool can no longer afford to settle for mediocrity if they are to challenge for honours. As well as Alisson, they must replace goalkeeping coach John Achterberg who has tried and failed to improve Karius or Simon Mignolet.

FSG have already splashed the cash on the likes of Fabinho and Naby Keita, though Karius’ performance has left them with no choice other than to spend even more.
