Liverpool supporters have been relatively subdued in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side concede a late leveller to end up drawing 1-1 with Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Toffees off the back of three successive victories in all competitions, and looked on course for a fourth when Mohamed Salah netted his 19th goal of the campaign just before the break. However, they were unable to see it out as Dejan Lovren clumsily felled Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the box 13 minutes from time, from which Wayne Rooney slotted home the resulting penalty to preserve a point for Sam Allardyce’s side, thus preventing Klopp’s Liverpool from recording a ninth Premier League win of the season.
Consequently, there have been many frustrated Liverpudlians in the Tavern this week, although their mood may be improved by a recent report from L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), which suggests that the Reds are set to reignite their interest in Monaco forward Thomas Lemar in January.
The 22-year-old played a significant part in the French side’s incredible success last season, netting 14 goals and laying on 17 assists in all competitions to help Leonardo Jardim’s men to the Ligue 1 title, as well as the last four of the Champions League.
However, things haven’t quite happened for the France international this term with just one goal to show for his efforts, yet that doesn’t appear to have put Klopp’s Liverpool off as they are reportedly ready to reignite their interest in the forward in the New Year.
And with the future of Philippe Coutinho far from certain, it appears that the Reds chief and the club’s hierarchy FSG are seeking replacements in preparation for the increasingly inevitable, but whether they can indeed get a deal done for Lemar, ahead of other interested parties, remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Liverpool failed with a big money move for Monaco’s Thomas Lemar during the summer, with the Frenchman hot property after a stunning season for the Ligue 1 champions.
And although he, like the team in general, have been unable to replicate that success this term, the 22-year-old remains in-demand ahead of the January transfer window, with Jurgen Klopp’s Reds reportedly ready to reignite their interest in the France international.
Philippe Coutinho’s seemingly inevitable departure may well be playing a part in their interest, yet it does appear that the club’s owners FSG are ready to back Klopp in the transfer market in a bid to keep the club in amongst the Premier League’s top four.
