Metro have been all about Newcastle United of late for us here in the Football Transfer Tavern and now it seems that today will be no different with the news that Darren Bent is close to snubbing the club.
The Aston Villa man has been on the verge of a move away from Paul Lambert’s men all summer following his peripheral 2012/13 campaign where the former Norwich City manager froze him out of the first team.
With Christian Benteke showing exactly how good he was in his first season in England not to mention Lambert not exactly taking to Bent, the player has been looking for a move for some time.
Despite costing Villa nearly £25 million, Bent has been available for considerably less than that figure and Villa are prepared to take a massive loss on the player they once saw as their main man.
Both Newcastle and Fulham have been sniffing around the England international but it seems that only Fulham are prepared to pay close to what Villa expect.
Newcastle’s director of football Joe Kinnear has made it clear they cannot go above £2 million for the forward, yet after seeing an initial bid rejected Fulham have made another £5.5 million bid and are hopeful of a deal being agreed soon.
