It’s been a tough summer for Newcastle as the club has failed to buy many players to help Rafa Benitez keep the club in the league.
The Newcastle manager has only been presented with Ki Sung-yeung, Martin Dubravka and Kenedy due to the club’s sell before they buy policy.
Top of Benitez’s transfer wishlist was a new striker. The club loaned Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham last year and the Serbian striker could be sold this season as the Mike Ashley looks to cash in and bolster the funds. However, the Mirror is reporting that if Fulham can’t finalise a deal for Mitrovic, they will switch their attention to Dwight Gayle.
According to the report, Mitrovic has agreed personal terms with Fulham and while Newcastle are keen to raise some transfer money, there has been no agreement between the two clubs.
Gayle is seen as an alternative for Mitrovic and would be a great sale for Newcastle. Although during Newcastle’s return to the Championship, Gayle scored 23 goals, the 27-year-old has never been able to reach double figures in the Premier League and is quite obviously not cut out for the top level.
While selling Gayle would further reduce Newcastle’s options up front, the additional money may finally go some way to tempting Ashley into spending some money.
With everything going on around Newcastle, selling Gayle for anything around £10 million or more might just be a good piece of business.
