Here in the Football Transfer Tavern we always like to see a failed transfer revisited and according to Goal.com, Fulham’s proposed move for Roma goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg is back on.
The 30-year-old was reportedly extremely close to joining the Craven Cottage-based club in January but for a late deadline deal to collapse at the last minute after the Italian side pulled the plug despite Stekelenburg being on a plane to London.
However Martin Jol is not willing to give up the chase for the Dutch international shot stopper and with a fee of around £5.1 million being discussed we could yet see the keeper appearing for the Cottagers next season.
A Roma source told Goal.com: “The channels of communication have stayed open since January,”
“The two clubs are in talks about a permanent move. Stekelenburg is playing better since the change of manager but he wants to leave Roma. He doesn’t speak Italian and the environment doesn’t really suit him.”
Current first choice keeper Mark Schwarzer has been offered a new one-year extension by the club but the Australian, who will be 41 in October, is considering the offer after being told he will be replaced with a fresh pair of hands in the summer.
Will Fulham get the Dutchman at the second time of asking? Rate this rumour below.
