Fulham set to finally land top target

stekelenburg.jpgFulham supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern are toasting the news that the club are set to land Roma keeper Maarten Stekelenburg after the Italian club confirmed that a deal has been concluded, according to Sky Sports.

The Dutch international was very close to joining the Cottagers in January and even made the trip to England in order to agree terms but the transfer collapsed when the Italian giants were unable to find a replacement for the impressive shot stopper.

Roma’s sporting director Franco Baldini has confirmed today that Fulham and Martin Jol will pay £4 million for the 30-year-old keeper.

“I went to London for the sale of Stekelenburg at Fulham,” he told Corriere dello Sport.

“There were questions to be answered, but I closed a deal subject to the usual conditions.”

Stekelenburg’s agent, Rob Jansen, has put a statement on his official website that confirms an agreement is in place and the player is now discussing terms with the club.

“The current employer of the goalkeeper, AS Roma, and Fulham have already reached an agreement on the transfer of Stekelenburg to London,” read the statement. “Now the club and the player can see it out.”

Fulham are seeking a replacement for current first choice keepeer Mark Schwarzer who looks set to leave after five years despite being offered a new contract by the club. The Australian international has admitted he could be playing elsewhere next season.

“There’s no new developments, there’s no new discussions, there’s no nothing. I’m confident my club situation will resolve itself one way or another,” he told the Guardian.

Stekelenburg will become Fulham’s third summer signing following the arrivals of Athletic Bilbao’s Fernando Amorebieta and Dnipro’s Derek Boateng.
