Further encouragement for Newcastle fans as promising reports emerge

Newcastle United supporters were in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern over the weekend after seeing the Magpies return to winning ways in the Premier League courtesy of a 1-0 success over Crystal Palace at St James’ Park.

Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Eagles on Saturday having drawn their last two league games against Liverpool and Southampton, but nonetheless firmly lodged inside the top half of the division. Yet the North East giants got back to winning ways to record their fourth victory of the campaign thanks to Mikel Merino’s 86th minute header, in turn moving Benitez’s side up to seventh place in the table, and keeping Palace firmly rooted to the bottom of the division.

And those three points certainly delighted our resident Newcastle fans in the Tavern, and they are likely to be further intrigued by a recent report from The Chronicle, which suggests that the Magpies are on the lookout for more Bundesliga signings like midfielder Merino.

The 21-year-old initially joined the club on a temporary deal from German giants Borussia Dortmund back in July, but has since made that move permanent as a result of several impressive displays for the North East giants, having appeared in all nine of their Premier League games this term.

And it seems that the Spain Under-21 international is going to play a crucial role in helping Benitez’s side re-establish themselves as a top tier club in the coming years, and the Magpies are reportedly keeping tabs on the Bundesliga in a bid to bring more players like Merino to St James’ Park in the coming windows.

And given how competitive the German top-flight is, and how much talent there is in the division, Newcastle fans in the Tavern can certainly get excited about the possibility of more arrivals at the club in the near future.

Landlord’s verdict: Much was made of Newcastle United’s struggles during the summer transfer window, what with the club failing to land several top transfer targets.

Yet one man they did get through the door was midfielder Mikel Merino, who has proven to be an excellent addition having appeared in all nine of their Premier League games thus far, and indeed bagging the winner in their 1-0 success over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

And it appears that Newcastle will continue to monitor the Bundesliga in a bid to bring more players of Merino’s ilk to St James’ Park over the coming windows, given how well he has adapted and settled into life in the North East.

And if any potential signing is half as good as Merino, the Magpies will have a very talented players on their books.
