Further frustration for Benitez in pursuit of much-needed January reinforcements

Newcastle United supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing the Magpies go down 1-0 at home to Everton on Wednesday night, thus suffering a seventh Premier League defeat in eight matches.

Rafa Benitez’s men made a solid start to life back in the top-flight by winning four of their opening nine league games, but things have gone downhill fast for the Magpies in recent times, to the point that they are now just a point clear of the bottom three. And the North East giants recorded a seventh league defeat in eight on Wednesday night as a Wayne Rooney strike midway through the first half was enough to seal a 1-0 success for Sam Allardyce’s side at St James’ Park, leaving Newcastle 16th in the division and very much looking over their shoulder heading into the January transfer window.

Consequently, there have been many despondent Magpies fans in the Tavern in recent times, and their mood is unlikely to improve if a recent report from Don Balon is anything to go by, which suggests that goalkeeping target Iker Casillas has made up his mind about his next destination, and it’s not the North East.

The 36-year-old currently plays his trade at Portuguese giants Porto and has done so since 2015 having ended a 25-year association with European heavyweights Real Madrid, with whom he won five La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns.

Yet his future at Porto has been subject of speculation in recent times, with Benitez’s Newcastle one side reportedly keen on the Spain international as the former Real chief seeks to bolster his goalkeeping ranks at St James’ Park.

However, recent reports suggest that Casillas will not be moving to the Premier League, as the Spaniard has reportedly chosen Major League Soccer as his next destination, which is sure to strike a huge blow in Benitez’s January transfer plans as he seeks much-needed reinforcements to bolster his squad at St James’ Park.

Landlord’s verdict: Much was made of Newcastle United’s inability to land top targets during the summer transfer window, to the point that manager Rafa Benitez reportedly came close to leaving his role as boss.

And one area that appeared on the agenda was the goalkeeping department, and one man that seemed to be on the wishlist was Porto shot-stopper Iker Casillas, a Real Madrid legend who won five La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns during his 25-year stint in the Spanish capital.

However, the 36-year-old has reportedly chosen Major League Soccer as his next destination as opposed to a move to St James’ Park, in what is sure to come as a further blow to Benitez’s transfer plans.

But with the takeover reportedly nearing a conclusion, the Spaniard may have more room to manoeuvre in the January window, even if Casillas is one man who won’t be making the move to the North East.
