Everton fans were left drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern on Sunday after seeing their side’s poor run of form continue.
The Merseyside outfit could only draw 2-2 at home to Apollon Limassol on Thursday night in the Europa League to remain winless in that competition, and they were unable to record a third Premier League victory of the campaign against Sean Dyche’s Burnley either.
Jeff Hendrick scored what turned out to be the winner midway through the first half to increase the pressure on Toffees chief Ronald Koeman, whose side languish in 16th place in the top-flight despite spending in excess of £100 million during the summer.
And several of our resident Evertonians are unlikely to be too happy by a recent report from The Daily Star either, which suggests that the club are set to end their pursuit of a summer transfer target, namely Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud.
The 30-year-old moved to the Emirates Stadium back in 2012 and netted his 100th goal for the club in their Europa League success over BATE Borisov on Thursday night, that coming in his 237th appearance for the Gunners.
The France international has exceeded 15 goals in a season every year since making the move to North London yet often hasn’t got the credit he deserves, and last term still managed to score 12 Premier League goals despite starting just 11 times.
Yet his future was subject to much speculation over the summer following the arrival of Alexandre Lacazette, with Everton reportedly interested but unable to get a deal over the line, and it doesn’t look like they will in January either as reports suggest that they will not reignite their interest in Giroud.
The Toffees are seriously struggling in the striking department, having bagged just four league goals so far this term, and moving for Giroud would certainly bolster those ranks, yet it’s a deal which looks increasingly unlikely to happen in the New Year.
Landlord’s verdict: Everton’s failure to land a replacement for star striker Romelu Lukaku during the summer looks set to be a fatal one, if the first seven games of the season are anything to go by.
Ronald Koeman’s men have managed just four goals in the Premier League so far, with Wayne Rooney and Oumar Niasse both netting twice, so news that the Toffees are unlikely to reignite their interest in Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud in January is probably not going to be well received by several Evertonians.
The Frenchman has come in for much criticism during his time at the Emirates Stadium but has still managed 100 goals in five years, bagging over 15 in every season with the Gunners.
The 30-year-old has yet to start a Premier League game for Arsenal this term though, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be moving to Everton in January in a move which may well have benefited all parties involved.
