Few players at Man Utd have played as often for as long as Antonio Valencia. Valencia joined Man Utd back in 2009, nearly 10 years ago, and he’s since made over 200 domestic appearances for the Red Devils. More recently, he’s moved into more of a defensive role in place of his more natural attacking midfield berth, and he’s done well.
Though he’s clearly more effective in the final third, he’s been a decent enough fill-in for the Red Devils over the years, but it appears as though Man Utd fans are ready for him to take a seat on the bench.
We recently asked fans to choose between Diogo Dalot and Antonio Valencia, and it’s fair to say that the response came in the form of a landslide. A whopping 95% of polled Man Utd fans voted in favour of Dalot, whilst just 5% of supporters backed Valencia.
Clearly impressed by his display for the Red Devils against Young Boys last week, it hasn’t taken much for Dalot to get on the good side of the Old Trafford faithful. And with good reason, given the brilliant balance that he offered on the right-hand side last week. Delivering fantastic passing, dribbling, positioning and tackling, Dalot was a joy to watch, and though he’s clearly got a lot of developing still to do, many fans recognise that he’s good enough to make the jump into the first team.
Whether Mourinho will echo that sentiment remains to be seen, but Dalot is doing everything right so far. He’s young, but he’s got so much talent, and given the fine form of Luke Shaw, perhaps that could encourage Mourinho to take more of a punt on youth.
