Man Utd are a team in need of trophies, and next season, Jose Mourinho will be expected to put in a significant challenge in the English top flight. The Red Devils came closer than they have in a long time last season, but in the end, they fell well short of Man City.
Fortunately, Mourinho has improved his squad this summer with the signing of Fred, and the Brazilian could be the missing piece that the club lacked last term.
After all, central midfield was a real problem area for the club last season. Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba seemed like the perfect match on paper, but in reality, the midfield lacked balance – and the middle of the park is often where games are won and lost.

In Fred, Man Utd now have a player that could tip the scales. He’s the perfect balance of Pogba and Matic in that he can have an impact both going forward and defensively. He’s good at breaking up play, but he’s also fantastic at moving it forward and getting the ball closer towards the enemy goal. He has brilliant energy and pace, whilst he’s also quite a physical presence in the midfield – making him the perfect player to bind the defensively-minded Matic and the more offensive Pogba.
Furthermore, at 25-years-old, he’s only going to get better, not to mention that his relative youth means that Nemanja Matic may finally be able to get a rest when a three-man midfield isn’t required. Matic’s game reduced in quality towards the end of last season, likely due to fatigue, and Fred would be able to cover him if required.
In truth, Man Utd’s decision to land Fred could go down as masterstroke, and it’s important that Mourinho uses him well next term.
