“If you said to any young player that you could play for Barcelona or Real would they turn it down? Probably not. If a bid was accepted you would obviously have to seriously consider it.” (Daily Mail)
Every player has his price and this time, Gareth Bale has found it. After years of constant speculation, the Tottenham Hotspur winger finally looks to be on his way out. Since raising his profile in the Champions League games against Inter Milan in 2010, many high-profile clubs are in the hunt for the Welshman.
And it looks as if Real Madrid are right on top of the list.
Jose Mourinho has always claimed to be one of Bale’s biggest fans after labelling him ‘amazing’ in 2011 after Tottenham’s surprising debut in European’s greatest competition. (BBC) The admiration for the winger’s speed and penetration in and around the opposite box has seen Mourinho target Bale ever since that year but now it seems extremely likely Spurs could lose yet another big name.
Luka Modrić and Rafael Van der Vaart were the latest big-name departures from White Hart Lane following the acquisition of new manager Andre Villas-Boas. Yet with no similarly-statured names heading in, fans would be devastated to lose yet another prestigious player.
As the strain grows stronger on the Portuguese head coach, 23-year-old Bale looks to be jumping ship at the end of what could be a testing season. Even though, as it stands, their arch rivals Arsenal are within touching distance, the inexperience of Villas-Boas does pose a problem. Fans have voiced their concerns and now Bale’s head seems to have turned.
“It would be nice to experience other leagues and other cultures”, he told the Daily Mirror. “I have always said I am not afraid to go abroad. If the time comes and a team that is right comes in for me, then I will look at it seriously. I will see what happens.”
If Spanish giants Barcelona or Real Madrid do decide to make an offer, it would be difficult to see chairman Daniel Levy reject the money, especially as it may be too good to refuse. However, if Spurs are to reach a Champions League spot this campaign, Bale could stay just one more year.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
