The Middlesbrough fans are getting the rounds in at the Transfer Tavern tonight as they cross their fingers, hoping their captain won’t leave the club.
Following reports from Sky Sports that West Brom are preparing a revised offer for Middlesbrough centre back Ben Gibson, our landlord has been thinking about what it could mean for the club should the defender go.
Basically, he came to the conclusion that Garry Monk cannot allow that to happen.
Monk is a good manager so Boro’s board will be expecting at least a play-off place come the end of the next season.
If they are the expectations then selling one of the club’s best players, even if it was for upwards of £20 million wouldn’t make that task any easier.
There are probably a few players within the Middlesbrough ranks who might be thinking of trying to jump ship following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.
If Monk allows the transfer of Gibson away from the club then all that will do is open the door for any other player who may want to leave.
As the Boro manager said in the report, the club is financially stable and aren’t in a position where they need to sell their top talent.
Tie the defender down to a new contract and have him help you regain your place in the top flight of English football, without him it would be a lot harder.
