The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern couldn’t be happier with Harry Kane’s form over the last year or so. The Englishman has been simply sensational, and he rounded off a stellar 2017 by beating Alan Shearer’s record haul over the course of the calendar year.
Kane’s form has so often lined up with the nature of Tottenham’s recent success, with his goalscoring run over the last couple of years helping Tottenham to back-to-back title challenges in the Premier League. However, despite the support for Kane and his recent record, BBC pundit Garth Crooks has seen fit to fire a sly dig at the Englishman.
Despite including him in his team of the festive period, Crooks revealed that Kane’s records will mean nothing if he fails to secure any silverware.
Crooks said: “Scoring goals is Kane’s job and he does it exceptionally well we know that. Records are for statisticians especially when your trophy cabinet is bare. Congratulations Harry, you broke Alan Shearer’s record”.
He added: “Meanwhile, players like Raheem Sterling and Victor Moses (who I am often told are not in Kane’s class) are adding domestic and European titles to their names. Need I say more?”.
Crooks has become renowned in the Transfer Tavern for controversial and against the grain comments in his weekly columns, and this latest point is sure to rub Tottenham fans the wrong way.
That being said, you can certainly see his point of view. As harsh as it is, you don’t get a medal for second-place, and so Kane’s record won’t be remembered with such joy by Tottenham fans if it isn’t joined by a few other trophies in his trophy case.
Kane clearly needs to add trophies, that much is clear. If he wants to go down in history, he cannot end his career without a major trophy in his cabinet.
However, he deserves more credit than Crooks is giving him here. At present, he’s one of Europe’s best players, and there’s an argument to suggest that he was the best striker in the world in 2017.
To compare him with someone like Victor Moses, who, though he has impressed over the last 18 months, has trodden water for much of his career, does Kane a disservice. He’s clearly in another tier, though clearly, Crooks feels as though trophies are the main counter of quality.
