Genoa consider move for Achraf Lazaar

A Newcastle United defender could be about to end his nightmare time at St. James’ Park as he could be offered a return to Italy.

According to a report by Gianluca Di Marzio, Achraf Lazaar is thought to have become a transfer target for Genoa this summer.

The Morocco international is deemed surplus to requirements at The Magpies, with Rafa Benitez more than happy for him to depart, having spent last season on loan at Benevento.

That move did not really seem to give his career the restart he would have liked, as he made only nine appearances for them, however, it seems to have done enough for Genoa to take a chance on him.

It is understood that the Serie A side sees the 26-year-old as the player that can replace their own left-back, with Diego Laxalt thought to be closing in on a move to AC Milan.

The Verdict:

Lazaar knows he needs to leave Newcastle this summer and a move back to Serie A could help him to get his career back on track.

The full-back has plenty of experience of the Italian top-flight, having starred for Palermo before his ill-fated switch to St. James’ Park.

It remains to be seen if a deal can be completed between the two sides before the end of the transfer window and whether it will be a permanent switch or just a temporary one.
