German club nearly hijacked Premier League’s biggest deal

Kevin de BruyneManchester City fans have been talking up the prospects of Kevin De Bruyne to other fans here in the Transfer Tavern ever since he signed last week.

However they may have German giants Bayern Munich to thank for signing of the midfielder who cost the club a whopping £58m.

The Daily Star have quoted De Bruyne’s agent as saying that Bayern Munich were very much interested in signing the player and talks had advanced quickly, only for them to pull the plug on the deal unexpectedly several days later. Clearing the way for Manchester City to sign the midfielder without issue.

The former Chelsea midfielder contributed an unbelievably impressive 20 assists and 10 goals for Wolfsburg last season. Propelling his club to second in the Bundesliga, their highest finish for six years, and their second highest finish ever.

His impressive season was thrust in the face of the Munich club in January this year where the Belgian midfielder De Bruyne scored two and set up one as Wolfsburg blew away Bayern in a 4-1 victory. This no doubt sparked an interest in him ever since, but for whatever reason Bayern did not follow through with the deal.

Manchester City fans, over a pint or two I’m sure, will be watching the debut of their big money signing when the Premier League returns with big expectation. Can he justify the club record fee and replicate his form from last season?

Do you think Bayern made a mistake ending their interest in the player? Manchester City fans, do you expect De Bruyne to be a success at your club. Let us know in the comment section below!
