Arsenal fans are rushing over to the bar here in the Football Transfer Tavern after our landlord pulls out a copy of Metro.
As we eagerly wait for our landlord to tell us everything, we pull up our bar stools, sip our pints and begin to listen. Arsenal are, according to Metro, looking to make a bid for Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira and could well find the player more receptive than originally first thought.
The German international was subject of a late bid from Manchester United on deadline day – which was instantly rejected by Los Blancos.
Now it seems that despite no sale going through this summer, Khedira would consider moving on next summer. There is a wealth of talent at the Bernabeu and especially in the middle of the park.
Players like Casemiro and Asier Illarramendi have come in and made competition even more fierce. Understandably, one of our punters notes that the squad is now stronger than ever.
This of course means that certain players could miss out or even be sold to accommodate others, much like in the case of Ozil making way for the arrival of Gareth Bale. Ozil – a national compatriot of Khedira – could help sweeten the potential deal for the former Stuttgart enforcer.
The players know each other well, both on and off the field. Khedira has made no secret of his unhappiness at Ozil’s departure and has been reported to be open about the prospect of linking up with Ozil again.
“Personally, I feel bad about Mesut’s transfer. We are very, very good friends,” Khedira said.
“His departure is a loss also from a sporting perspective. Mesut can make the difference.”
Arsene Wenger has more than enough money to land Khedira and would be willing to use Ozil’s close relationship with the player as a key influencer. Given Chelsea and Manchester United are also keen on the player, there could be interesting times ahead.
Can Arsenal realistically land Khedira and add to their growing German contingent? Let us know your thoughts below.
