The Rangers fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping to welcome a handful of new arrivals to Ibrox this summer in order to end Celtic’s dominance in the SPFL.
Our resident Gers have been forced to watch on with a combination of envy and anger in recent seasons as Celtic have dominated the Scottish top-flight with an imperious swagger which has appeared almost impossible to compete with at times. However, the Rangers supporters believe that Steven Gerrard could be the man to break the status quo, providing he is backed sufficiently in the transfer market.
However, Rangers might not need to spend a single penny in order to sign a player of pure quality next season if they can tempt Man City to allow Oleksandr Zinchenko (valued at £6.3 million by Transfermarkt) to move on loan this summer.
The 21-year-old is an attacking midfielder by trade, but he spent most of last season deputising at left-back due to City’s mini injury crisis in that position.
Despite playing in an unfamiliar role, Zinchenko played with a level of composure beyond his years and impressed the City supporters whenever he was called upon.
However, with Benjamin Mendy back in the fold, the Ukraine international may find himself surplus to requirements next season, so the appeal of both returning to his natural position and regular first-team opportunities at Rangers would certainly give him something to think about.
Another of City’s youngsters, namely Patrick Roberts has enjoyed plenty of success during his extended loan spell with Celtic, so Guardiola could be tempted to allow Zinchenko to also move north of the border.
Although Zinchenko has rarely been seen in an attacking midfield position, his level of technique, extensive range of passing and ability to find space in the final-third suggests he could become a resounding success in his natural position within the seasons to come.
With that in mind, Gerrard should make contact with Man City this summer regarding a potential loan deal for Zinchenko – preferably with an option to buy – as he could provide the flair and creativity which will be needed to go head-to-head with Celtic for the SPFL title next season.
