The Southampton fans were feeling frustrated in the Transfer Tavern last night following a disappointing result against Brighton and Hove Albion.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s struggling Saints side remain in the bottom-three after their lacklustre home performance against fellow relegation rivals Brighton ended in a 1-1 draw at Saint Mary’s. The result leaves Southampton behind their midweek opponents in 18th place after 25 fixtures with only the acquisition of Guido Carrillo to bring to the table following a quiet January transfer window.
The Saints supporters could be forgiven for expecting their club to make a handful of signings with the money they accumulated from the record-breaking sale of Virgil Van Dijk, but their expectations have certainly not been met by their beloved club.
Southampton only managed to bring Monaco striker Guido Carrillo to the club in a £19 million deal, and the lack of transfer activity this month has hugely frustrated the supporters who are beginning to fear relegation this season.
Following the conclusion of the transfer window, the Saints faithful turned out in their numbers on Twitter to slate their Head of Football Development Les Reed for his failure to reinvest the funds acquired from Van Dijk’s sale this month.
The supporters also had some strong words for Mauricio Pellegrino, and it seems their patience has ran out with the Argentine manager who they fear will take the club down into The Championship.
Some very strong words have been said on Twitter, but it’s easy to sympathise with their opinions based Southampton’s performances this season and their lack of activity in the transfer market.
Here’s what the supporters have had to say about their club’s hierarchy on Twitter following an uninspiring transfer window…
#saintsfc should not be where they are in the table. Pellegrino has undoubtedly made mistakes but not fair just to blame him. Club have had three bad transfer windows in a row. Les Reed quick to take the plaudits when things were going well but notably quiet now

I agree. Sad to say I'm struggling to see any other outcome than relegation

Agree about Reed, can’t stand him, but that squad should be nowhere near the bottom and that falls on pellegrino.

Rubbish, he’s had the money, doesn’t play the players. Clueless.

The recruitment has been poor, no doubt. But that team, as it stands, should not be in the relegation zone. They have been hideously mismanaged.

Les reed is a clown

Really not impressed with Les Reed's work over recent years.
Two terrible managerial appointments along with a flurry of shocking transfer windows in which we have failed to replace players sold for the past couple of seasons due to being petty with fees.

Agree with everything you’ve said. We are a joke at the moment – clueless comes to mind.

IMO..it’s wrong to blame MP for this transfer fiasco
Les Reed has had all month to conduct his business knowing VVD deal was done before new year.
Totally unacceptable that club is using Moscow unable to find replacement excuse
Les, your position is untenable #SaintsFC

Big shoutout to Les Reed for not signing a creative player knowing well that’s what the team are lacking #saintsfc
