Ghana have produced a number of talented players who have embraced European football to its full extent. Big-name footballers such as Asamoah Gyan and Michael Essien have all found fame since moving to Europe and it’s once again another youngster from Ghana that is making a name for himself.
This time, Tottenham want him.
Porto’s new sensation Christian Atsu has emerged as a top transfer target for André Villas-Boas after his emergence in the Primeira Liga, Portugal’s top division. Since starting his career as a 17-year-old, the Ghanaian was called up for his first senior game by Villas-Boas who was Porto’s manager in 2011. By recognising Atsu’s gift, AVB now wants the youngster back under his helm at White Hart Lane.
But just how good is the 20-year-old?
Not to put pressure on the tricky winger but since making his international debut for The Black Stars, fans have already likened him to a certain little Argentinian. But Atsu doesn’t want to have any of that as he claims he is a completely different player to Lionel Messi. On Hello FM, a Ghanaian radio channel, Atsu claimed: ““Messi is Messi and I am Christian Atsu Twasam. Though we might have some things in common, we are two different players. I am still learning.” (Ghana MMA)
With a £12m price-tag on his shoulders, Porto will have to be very careful not to lose one of their prize possessions. Now a regular first team member for the Dragões, Atsu has gone on to play in the Champions League this season too, adding vital experience to his game. What is more, after scoring in his first game for Ghana, he has gone on to make four further international appearances and has found the net again, making it two goals in total.
However optimistic Ghana fans have been told to be a little cautious over the left-footed winger as he is very much on a learning curve. “Ghanaians shouldn’t put too much pressure on him,” cautioned compatriot striker Dede Ayew, before adding: “I believe that he’s going to be a great player.” Asamoah Gyan also had praise for Atsu. “He’s been incredible. If he continues this way he’s going to be a star.” (BBC)
Alongside Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale, Tottenham have an array of fast-paced, skilful wingers and Atsu is no different. Although he doesn’t actually seem necessary to Spurs’ cause at this moment in time, the 20-year-old may prove to be a valuable prospect for the future. Only time will tell if Christian Atsu can make it to be as good as Messi but if he is anywhere near, the future looks incredibly bright.
