Liverpool will be feeling confident that they can progress into the next round of the Champions League after being drawn against Porto, wouldn’t they? Jurgen Klopp’s have managed to overcome group games against Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli, before seeing off Bayern Munich to reach this stage.
Gini Wijnaldum has been a key player for the Reds this season, whether that be in the European competition or in the Premier League, putting in a number of vital performances, however, it appears he is yet to be rewarded.
What’s the News?
According to a report by the Liverpool Echo, the Dutch midfielder has revealed that talks about an extension to his current deal are yet to begin, despite having seen a number of his team-mates be rewarded for their displays.
“No, I did not speak with the club yet,” he said. “That is something for the club. I will see what happens. I signed a five-year contract and I am still under contract. I just do my job to perform. A new contract has to come from the club.”
Although talks about a contract extension are yet to start, it surely will not be too long before Wijnadum is offered a new deal to remain at Anfield.
Liverpool appear to love to reward their players for outstanding performances, with the likes of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane, Joe Gomez, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold having all received long-term deals over the past 12 months (Liverpool Echo).
The 28-year-old has clearly become a favourite of Klopp’s as he is usually one of the first names on the teamsheet and has proved that he has the quality to be a regular for the club. The Dutchman can also go underrated at times (Sky Sports), although he has arguably become one of the Premier League’s best utility men over the years.
Wijnaldum consistently puts in a shift in the midfield, whether it be when The Reds are defending or are on the attack and has subsequently played an important role in their pursuit of the Champions League and England’s top-flight title.
Liverpool fans, surely it will not be too long before Wijnaldum is offered a new contract? Do you think he deserves a new deal? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
