Jose Mourinho has done a lot of things during his time as manager. He’s won numerous league titles, he’s won European cups, and he’s commanded respect wherever he’s gone. However, one success story that has evaded him thus far is that which surrounds youth development.
Typically preferring to utilise older, more experienced players, the Portuguese has rarely called on academy players – but could this weekend’s clash with Watford be the perfect chance for that to change?
It’s a game of little significance for the Red Devils, and so perhaps Mourinho could offer a chance to a teenager that has yet to get much of a chance – Angel Gomes. We recently made the case for just that, with the attacker impressing our landlord in recent months.
Gomes is arguably the shining star in the Man Utd developmental system, and at just 17-years-old, he’s already good enough to be playing first-team football.
Man Utd fans, it seems, want to see him make that leap this weekend – at least judging by a recent poll.
We recently quizzed Man Utd fans on whether he should play against the Hornets, and a whopping 90% of supporters voted in favour of that happening. Conversely, just 10% of supporters voted against the prospect.
Clearly, then, not only do fans want to see more young players, but more specifically, they want to see more of Gomes, and that’s no surprise.
A tricky, technically gifted and pacy attacking midfielder, he’d be a real asset for the team alongside the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Marcus Rashford.
