Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern have been left wondering what might have been, after their afternoon beverages were interrupted by intriguing reports from one of the best players in the world.
Luis Suarez, who’s set for face off against the Gunners in a massive Champions League tie tomorrow, is quoted by Metro as revealing the reasons he turned down a record-breaking move to Arsenal in 2013.
Arsenal offered £40m for the Uruguayan forward during his days at Liverpool, which would have made him the Gunners most expensive signing in history, and the controversial striker was open to a move- until former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard persuaded him otherwise.
‘Arsenal’s interest in me was very public – I don’t think it is any secret. I had a private conversation with Stevie after training and he told me to give Liverpool another season – and to wait for Barcelona.’
‘Looking back now it is one of the most important conversations of my life, but that is Stevie, he was a captain who was always ready to give his players advice.’
The following year, after embarrassing antics in the World Cup, Suarez sealed his dream move to Barcelona for a fee of £75m and ended up winning the treble in his first season.
