Liverpool supporters have been somewhat frustrated in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team concede a 95th minute leveller to only draw 2-2 with Champions League chasing Tottenham in a thrilling encounter on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the North London outfit off the back of beating Huddersfield Town 3-0 in their preceding league outing, and with the knowledge that victory over Spurs would move them five points clear of their opponents in the race for a top four place. And they looked set to do just that as a Mohamed Salah brace gave them a 2-1 lead going into the dying minutes, only for Harry Kane to make amends for an earlier penalty miss by slotting home a 95th minute spot-kick to clinch a deserved point for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.
Consequently, there have been many frustrated Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping that their side can get back to winning ways against struggling Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Reds fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Real Madrid midfielder Isco could be on his way out of the Bernabeu in the summer.
And while there is no doubting how brilliant a signing he would be for Klopp’s side, going after the 25-year-old could turn to be one of their biggest mistakes in a while, as doing so could tempt the European champions into making a move for Reds star Salah.
The Egypt international made the move to Anfield during the summer and has been an absolute revelation so far, scoring a remarkable 28 goals in just 34 games for the club to help them to third place in the Premier League, and to the last 16 of the Champions League.
Unsurprisingly, there has been some reported interest from Real Madrid in the 25-year-old in the last few months, such have been his efforts in a Liverpool shirt, but he’s a player that the Merseyside giants simply cannot afford to let go in the summer (or the subsequent transfer windows for that matter).
Yet going after Isco could open that door ever so slightly, as Zinedine Zidane’s men may well view the sale of the Spain international to Liverpool as a way of unsettling and perhaps launching their own move for Salah, be it as part of the same deal or a separate one.
And as has been seen with the Philippe Coutinho saga since the summer, it’s very difficult for players, even those playing for huge clubs like Liverpool, to turn down the advances of either Barcelona or Real Madrid, arguably the two biggest clubs in European football.
Yes, Isco would be an excellent addition to a Liverpool side seemingly in need of replacing Coutinho’s creativity, but it could actually do them more harm than good in the long run as Real may sense an opportunity to lure Salah to the Bernabeu. And given the lacklustre season they are having, they may go big with transfers in the summer.
And while Isco would come in and almost certainly improve Klopp’s squad, there is currently no-one in that Liverpool side better than Salah – losing him would seriously weaken their forward options.
So, while a move for 25-year-old Isco looks like a great proposition on the surface, going for it could actually come back to haunt Liverpool in the long run, as Real Madrid may use that deal as a way of getting closer to Salah and perhaps convincing him of a move to the Bernabeu.
