‘Good news’, ‘Get in’ – Newcastle fans express delight ahead of Watford clash

Newcastle United supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side thumped 4-1 at Manchester United in the Premier League last weekend, in turn suffering a third successive loss.

Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash at Old Trafford off the back of disappointing league defeats at the hands of Burnley and Bournemouth, results which saw them slip into the bottom half of the division. And although they took an early lead against United through striker Dwight Gayle, that only served to give the travelling Magpies fans false hope as goals from Anthony Martial, Chris Smalling, Paul Pogba, and Romelu Lukaku sealed a comprehensive victory for the Red Devils, who in turn remain eight points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

Thus, there have been many deflated and disappointed Newcastle supporters in the Tavern this week, many of whom are already turning their attentions to their team’s crucial clash with Marco Silva’s Watford at St James’ Park on Saturday.

And many Magpies fans have taken to Twitter to react to Paul Merson’s prediction for the game in his weekly column for Sky Sports.

The former midfielder hasn’t been overly favourable to Benitez’s side this term and has very rarely predicted them to win, and the trend continues this week as the 49-year-old is tipping the Hornets to win 2-1 in the North East.

Yet this prediction has stimulated a positive response from Newcastle supporters on social media, as it is when Merson tips them to lose that the Magpies often secure victories…
