Yesterday saw Arsenal make the journey north to St James Park where they took on an out of sorts Newcastle United. The Gunners took all three points to make it nine points from their last three games and Granit Xhaka’s sublime free-kick was what got the ball rolling for Unai Emery’s side yesterday.

With a free-kick given in favour of the North London side around 25 yards out from the Newcastle goal a lot of fans were hoping they might see Lucas Torreira bag his first Arsenal goal. However, instead, the left-footed Xhaka stepped up to take and curled an absolute peach into the top corner. It was different to Xhaka’s usual style of smashing the ball past the keeper from range but it was certainly effective.
The Swiss international has come in for heavy criticism from a lot of Arsenal fans over the last couple of years but after Emery gave him a vote of confidence when he named the midfielder as one of his five captains before the season it seems like he’ll be a key figure for The Gunners. If he can keep scoring free-kicks it won’t be an issue but keeping his form up and adding goals to his game will be so important if he wants to win the fans back onside.
