The Manchester City fans who are gathered around the bar in The Transfer Tavern this evening are discussing reports that the club are closing in on their second signing of the summer.
Reports on Football Insider suggest that the Premier League side have agreed a deal with Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte and he will sign on the dotted line early next week.
The deal for the defender will cost Manchester City £38.6 million, and will be the second signing for Pep Guardiola this summer following the announcement that the club had signed Ilkay Gudongan yesterday.
The deal will take the Premier League sides spending so far this summer to £60.4 million as Pep Guardiola makes the early additions that he feels will make a difference to the side that finished in fourth place last season.
Laporte played virtually every minute of Athletic Bilbao’s La Liga campaign last season and this encouraged Manchester City to trigger the release clause in the French defender’s contract.
Our landlord in The Tavern believes that the double signing has signalled Guardiola’s intent on bringing the Premier League title back to the Etihad Stadium next season, and expects a couple more quality players to make their way to the club in the coming weeks.
