The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for their side to land a couple more signings this summer…
The Citizens struggled against Everton on Monday evening despite being the favourites for the clash, with Pep Guardiola only saved by an excellent Raheem Sterling goal in the final 10 minutes.
Their squad is strong, for the most part, but they could certainly do with a bit more quality – particularly in defence. Fortunately then, this, it seems, is where Guardiola is looking to place his focus between now and the end of the summer.
Man City’s interest in Jonny Evans has been long reported, with the Independent continuing to state that the Citizens are keen on a move for the Northern Irishman. However, significantly, it is now being reported that should the club be priced out of a move, they could look towards Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson – who is rated at around £20 million.
Gibson was a shining light in the Middlesbrough first team last season, and whilst his defensive displays weren’t enough to keep his side in the Premier League, he can have no shame in the way he performed during an otherwise disappointing display for his side.
Whether he is good enough to make the step up to Man City is another question entirely, but with the likes of Vincent Kompany alongside him, he’ll certainly be in a good position to progress and find his feet.
It’s clear that Man City need a bit more defensive depth, and Gibson would certainly fit the bill. He was one of the Premier League’s breakout players last term, and so he would fit in at the Etihad.
He’ll be keen to step up to the club, and whilst he wouldn’t be a regular, he would undoubtedly get fairly regular game time given the number of competitions that the club are in this season.
