Manchester City supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team get back to winning ways in the Premier League courtesy of a 3-1 victory over Watford on Tuesday night.
Pep Guardiola’s men were held to a goalless draw by resurgent Crystal Palace on New Year’s Eve to bring to an end their run of 18 straight league wins, yet maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign. But the Citizens comfortably picked up their 20th league success of the season as goals from Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero, as well as an own goal from Christian Kabasele, clinched the three points for Guardiola’s side, with Andre Gray’s late effort nothing more than a consolation for a Watford team that have won just one of their last nine matches.
Subsequently, there have been many buoyant City fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Daily Mirror, which suggests that their team have a battle on their hands from neighbours Manchester United in the race to sign West Brom’s Jonny Evans.
The 30-year-old was subject of a late bid from the Citizens back in the summer but no deal materialised, yet the Northern Ireland international has continued to impress in the heart of the Baggies backline, despite their struggles and lowly Premier League position.
And City have reportedly remained interested in the former Red Devil as Guardiola seeks to bolster his defensive ranks heading into the second half of the campaign, yet recent reports suggest that Jose Mourinho’s United will provide ‘serious competition’ for Evans’ signature, with Arsenal also thought to retain an interest.
Thus, it very much remains to be seen what the future holds for the 30-year-old, although one would suggest that a move away from West Brom is likely in the January window.
Landlord’s verdict: Pep Guardiola said last month that Manchester City may need to bring a defender to the club in January to solidify their ranks and bolster their options, and Jonny Evans appears to be one man on the shortlist.
The 30-year-old was subject of a City bid in the summer and it seems that they are keen to again land him in the winter window, although Manchester United are also thought to be interested and as such will reportedly provide ‘serious competition’ for the Northern Ireland star’s signature.
And with Arsenal also thought to be interested, things have become a lot trickier for Guardiola in his bid to land Evans, although their lofty Premier League position and superiority above their rivals surely gives them as good a chance as any to seal a deal for the centre-back.
