The Man City fans in the Transfer Tavern aren’t sure that their side could do any better. They’re on a remarkable 18 game winning streak at present, and it’s tough to see any side catching them in the Premier League right now. However, despite their success, Pep Guardiola is seemingly still not entirely happy with his playing squad.
According to the Daily Mail, the Citizens have drawn up a five-man shortlist for next month, with their near-perfect start to the season clearly not enough for Pep Guardiola. One player that is included on that list is Jonnie Evans, who currently plays for West Brom. Significantly, the Daily Mail reports that Evans ‘may have’ to be sold by West Brom as Alan Pardew looks to rebuild his team, perhaps giving Guardiola an increased chance of landing the defender.
Though clearly not a name on the level of Gabriel Jesus or Kevin De Bruyne, Evans would certainly be a decent fit at Man City. He has already won the Premier League with Man Utd, of course, and his proven Premier League experience will give the club that extra edge defensively.
Significantly, with Vincent Kompany going off injured against Newcastle on Wednesday night, it’s clear that Man City are lacking depth at the back, and so a move for Evans makes sense in that regard.
Rated at £13.5 million by Transfer Markt, West Brom will likely demand more than that for their captain, but if Guardiola wants proven quality, he’d be a decent choice.
Evans is clearly not a household name outside of the Premier League, but he’s proven his quality over the years in the English top flight.
He’s not going to do anything spectacular, but in terms of solid, consistent defensive options, the Northern Irishman would be a great choice.
